The purpose of this article is to walk you through the process of requesting a new rule or ruleset to be developed and implemented for your use within LawToolBox.
Please use the following link to see the rulesets that already exist for all customers in LawToolBox:
Prior to Filling out the Request Form:
Please schedule time to discuss your ruleset needs with our team.
- New Customer - Please contact your account representative to inquire about the existing rulesets, and whether or not the needs of your practice are already addressed.
- Existing Customer - Please Open a Ticket to contact our ruleset team to schedule a consultation to address your ruleset submission, including whether this is already covered in an existing ruleset, and whether your new ruleset is something we can accommodate.
As a SaaS company, LawToolBox builds rules based on an authoritative body and our rules are published for our entire client base. If your firm needs internal deadlines without an authority, the form will need to be discussed further with your account executive, or our ruleset team, and may be subject to additional fees. The scope of your request may also result in billable hours, so please do not start this form process until you have discussed your needs with our team.
We will not review any form submissions that have not been previously discussed with and approved by the LawToolBox ruleset team.
Questions to Ask Your Staff:
This is a brief list of questions to consider prior to starting the process of requesting a new ruleset. These are also points to address with either your account representative or our ruleset team.
- Is the proposed ruleset already included in the existing rules available for all customers?
- Are the proposed new rules a comprehensive practice area, or are they selections from a practice area or legal code?
- Is this a ruleset that is critical to your practice or something that will only be used on a limited basis?
- If this is just for limited use, please consider using the General Matters - Basic Calendaring (No Rules) ruleset. This will allow you to schedule custom deadlines with a number of automatic reminders, with all the same functionality of other dedicated rulesets.

- Do you currently have, or are you able to easily retrieve, published court authority documentation to support your new rules?
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Please reach out to our ruleset team with any questions regarding how specific information should be inputted or formatted, including the title of the ruleset, description of the trigger events, and what supplementary information will be needed to include on the deadlines that will be calculated in your new rule set.
- Download and open the ruleset request form. This will have been provided by the member of the ruleset team you were previously in contact with, but can also be accessed from attached files at the bottom of this article.
- Input the name of the new ruleset.
- Add the first trigger that will be present in this new ruleset.
- This is the milestone event of the ruleset, that can have related deadlines calculated based on the date we choose for this trigger.

- Provide a description of this trigger. This will be added to the event both on the Deadline Chart and the calendar event.
- Indicate whether this is a single-use or multi-use trigger.
- This choice determines whether or not this trigger can be used multiple times throughout the life of the matter to which it is added.
- This choice determines whether or not this trigger can be used multiple times throughout the life of the matter to which it is added.
- Add additional deadlines that will be calculated based off of the chosen date of our trigger. Again, this description is what will be displayed on the Deadline Chart and on the calendar event.
- Add a link to the court authority code that governs this particular deadline. This will be added to the deadline as a clickable link.
- Add the days between the trigger and this specific deadline (i.e. this deadline happens 14 days, or -14 days, in relation to the trigger).
- Indicate what type of days are counted in relation to the trigger. Most commonly this is either court days or calendar days.
- Add any additional notes. This can be included in this section, or input the number of the exception note for this deadline.
- Add any exceptions to this trigger below the table.
- Repeat steps 6-11 as many times as needed to add whatever related deadlines need to be calculated when that trigger is selected. You can add additional rows to the Trigger 1 table when needed.
- Repeat this entire process for any additional triggers need to be added to this ruleset. If needed, you can copy and past the trigger table and continue the numbering order of the triggers.
